AdSense Tracking: How To Track Your AdSense Performance
By Daniel Wandell | Published  10/6/2005 | AdSense | Unrated
AdSense Tracking Strategy For Maximum Earnings

I’ve been accused of over-emphasizing the role of tracking in your AdSense strategy.  Maybe that is because I believe tracking is the single most important element of AdSense success.    Sure, you could probably put AdSense on your site without any tracking at all, and make a little money.  Heck, depending your site’s subject matter, you might make a lot of money.  But to enter the big leagues of AdSense revenue, you better learn a thing or two about AdSense tracking.

By tracking your AdSense units, you will increase your earnings to the absolute maximum possible.  And you’ll have positive proof because your tracking reports will account for it.

Try these tips to best track your AdSense units.

Use Google AdSense tracking tools

Google provides useful tracking tools that present a ton of important information about your AdSense performance.

Google AdSense tracking tools offer the option to track by URL channels or by custom channels.

To track by URL, you can enter the URL of the page you want to track.  You can use the same function to track all pages in a folder or subdomain.   URL tracking will give you a good idea of how a page or section of your site is performing.

It’s also a great idea to create your own custom channels in order to track on-site factors such as ad format and placement.  For example, you could create a channel called “CategoryOneGrayUnitUpperRight.”  This is a great way to get in depth reports on how specific ad units are performing.

Google AdSense tracking tools will answer most of your questions and assist you in optimizing your site.

Want to delve deeper into your tracking statistics?

Use third party tracking software

AdSense Tracker is perhaps the most popular tool used by webmasters.  This program combines tracking with conventional site logs to bring you answers to many questions.  Who clicked on the ads?  Which specific ads did they click on?  Where did they come from?  AdSense Tracker answers all these questions.  It’s moderately priced at $99 and it’s worth the cost.

AsREP is less expensive but just as powerful as AdSense Tracker.   You can track multiple domains, visitor referrals,  and CTR per unit, among other features.  Cost is only $50.

Want a decent free AdSense tracker?   Try AdSense Logger.  It’s not as complete as the paid software, but it does offer many valuable tracking features.   AdSense Logger will give you an AdSense impression count and CTR for each page.  It will also tell you which ads are being clicked on and which ad units are performing the best.

There’s no excuse

There’s no reason not to track your AdSense units.  Between Google’s free tracking tools and excellent third party software, keeping vital AdSense statistics has never been easier.  Best of all, tracking will actually save you time!  By having organized statistics of your AdSense units, you’ll spend less time chasing your tail trying to find what works.

So there you have it.  AdSense tracking saves you time and helps you make more money.

This simple fact is what I think of when I'm accused of over-emphasizing the importance of tracking!
